Insights
Challenge: CDO and CMO of a rapidly growing biopharma company were dissatisfied with the growing cost overruns, quality challenges and delivery of existing full-service outsourcing (FSO) and Functional Service Provider (FSP) model.
Approach: Through a series of design sessions, fit-for-purpose benchmark gathering and SME interviews, developed a clear set of criteria, internal vs. FSO vs. FSP strategy and detailed cost modeling. Helped to down-select, negotiate with, and establish partnerships.
Impact: Strategy led to the selection of two alternate FSO CROs, two novel FSP categories, and a major internal build area. Supported a highly effective deployment, with governance and future operating model ways of working; to date, 20% cost reductions realized.
Optimizing Biometry Delivery and Cost via an FSP model
Identification and implementation of an optimal biometry FSP support model for a rapidly growing biopharma company.
Insights
Challenge: A cutting-edge $10B biopharma with a rapidly growing pipeline struggled with its full-service outsourcing (FSO) partners- particularly with biometry- data management, stats/ programming and biostats; performance and cost.
Approach: Helped to evaluate multiple internal vs. FSO vs. FSP sourcing models and provided extensive benchmarks and datapoints to help support an aligned vision for a ‘goldilocks’ solution- an FSP partnership that entailed low-cost country staff augmentation, with sponsor SOPs and requirements. Helped to identify the low-cost-country foundation, build this capability and fully transition to this model.
Impact: Helped to identify the right low-cost country strategy, staffing and org design. While the initial investment outlay was high, this strategy ultimately realized significant enhancements in delivery with a 40% cost reduction against the prior FSO model.
CDMO Manufacturing Network Partnerships
Streamlining of a CDMO manufacturing network partnerships for a Top-10 biopharma.
Insights
Challenge: A top-10 biopharma had just undergone a multi-billion-dollar merger and faced a sprawling manufacturing network of over 150 partners in over 400 sites. The company sought to simplify this network and drive major COGS reductions.
Approach: Evaluated all supply and demand requirements for their rapidly expanding portfolio, with a total of 16 categories for SM and LM network, including cutting-edge modalities. Through deep diligence, RFI/ RFPs and workshops, developed CDMO small and large molecule Network strategy to collapse supplier sites from >300 to 26 Strategic partners.
Impact: Helped to drive a unified CDMO network vision, and helped execute this via partner down-selection, negotiation and embedding to practice. This network: (1) ensured capacity coverage, quality, and capability, while recognizing a ~12% savings; (2) reduced # competitive bids by >80%, with 95% adherence, and (3) developed and rolled out training, governance and communications.
